August 2010: Upcoming Services
August 1: 10:30 a.m. | “The Moral of the Story: Whence Morality? And Why do the Right Thing?”
Marc Renault and Rachel Teates, Worship Associates. Music by David M. Glasgow.
Where does our sense of right and wrong come from? And why should we even heed the voice of our conscience? We’ll consider the issue of morality from religious, philosophical, and scientific viewpoints. All moral dilemmas will be resolved during this service! (That is a lie.)
August 8: 10:30 a.m. | “A Thousand Questions and a Few Answers!”
The Revs. Duane Fickeisen and Judy Welles. Music by David M. Glasgow.
Here’s your chance to ask us anything at all. (Of course we may not answer every question.) But do bring your ponderings, wonderings, whys, and why nots for our annual “question box” service. We’ll collect your queries early in the service and give you our best impromptu responses, remembering that revelation is not sealed and thus reserving the right to modify, clarify, or obfuscate later.
August 15: 10:30 a.m. | “Building Peace, One School at a Time.”
The Rev. Judy Welles, with John Kallmann, Worship Associate.
Greg Mortenson lived in his car, worked to earn money for mountaineering, and didn’t care about much else. Until he stumbled into a mountain village in Pakistan and promised to build the villagers a school. His dramatic story underscores the value of educating girls as a path to peace, and reminds us that shared commitments can overcome a lot of other differences between people and cultures.
August 22: 10:30 a.m. | “Coming Home to Unitarian Universalism.”
The Rev. Duane Fickeisen and Julie Ham, Worship Associate. Music by David M. Glasgow.
Unitarian Universalism offers an open door that welcomes seekers into progressive religious community. Come explore with us the grounds for the hospitality that gives sustenance for the soul and spirit, salve for the wounds life hands you, and challenge to live fully into your best self. Many who discover their faith here speak of a sense that they have “come home” to this community. Welcome home.
August 29: “One of the Seven Blunders of the World.”
Rev. Judy Welles and Geneva Politzer, Worship Associate. Music by David M. Glasgow.
Mahatma Ghandi wrote a provocative list of “The seven blunders of the world,” one of which is “worship without sacrifice.” These are not words that are easy for Unitarian Universalists to speak. Today we will look at U.U. worship practices and try to come to a broad understanding of what sacrifice really is and what it has to do with worship.
